Common Forklift Terms

Cab:

The cab is the central part of the forklift and houses the steering wheel, brake and gas pedals, mast controls, and gauges, as well as safety devices.

Carriage:

The carriage attaches the forks to the mast and provides structural support for the forklift.

Mast:

The mast is responsible for lifting and lowering loads to various heights.

Load Backrest:

The load backrest prevents loads from falling towards the driver, ensuring safe loading and unloading.

Forks:

Forks are extensions attached to the carriage that support loads from below and can be adjusted in width.

Overhead Guard:

The overhead guard surrounds the cab, preventing large objects from falling onto the driver.

Tires:

Tires on forklifts include steer tires at the back for maneuverability and drive tires at the front for stability.

Counterweight:

The counterweight, located at the back, prevents the forklift from tipping forward when loaded.

Power Supply:

Forklifts come in gas, diesel, propane, and electric (battery) power supply options.

Tilt Cylinder:

The tilt cylinder controls forward and backward tilt, while the hydraulic lift cylinder manages vertical lift of the mast, forks, and carriage.

Hydraulic Lift Cylinder:

The amount of vertical lift (raised or lowered) of the mast, forks, and carriage is controlled by the hydraulic lift cylinder.
