Common Forklift Terms
Cab:
The cab is the central part of the forklift and houses the steering wheel, brake and gas pedals, mast controls, and gauges, as well as safety devices.
Carriage:
The carriage attaches the forks to the mast and provides structural support for the forklift.
Mast:
The mast is responsible for lifting and lowering loads to various heights.
Load Backrest:
The load backrest prevents loads from falling towards the driver, ensuring safe loading and unloading.
Forks:
Forks are extensions attached to the carriage that support loads from below and can be adjusted in width.
Overhead Guard:
The overhead guard surrounds the cab, preventing large objects from falling onto the driver.
Tires:
Tires on forklifts include steer tires at the back for maneuverability and drive tires at the front for stability.
Counterweight:
The counterweight, located at the back, prevents the forklift from tipping forward when loaded.
Power Supply:
Forklifts come in gas, diesel, propane, and electric (battery) power supply options.
Tilt Cylinder:
The tilt cylinder controls forward and backward tilt, while the hydraulic lift cylinder manages vertical lift of the mast, forks, and carriage.
Hydraulic Lift Cylinder:
The amount of vertical lift (raised or lowered) of the mast, forks, and carriage is controlled by the hydraulic lift cylinder.
